Characteristics of a Professional Learning Community

Shared Norms and Values: Participants commit to working toward attaining common goals through inquiry based on public reflection.

Collaboration: Participants engage together in an ongoing process that builds trust and positive relationships as they share struggles, expertise, support, and leadership.

A Collective Focus on Student Learning: Centering the group’s work on how their teaching affects student leaning and finding effective ways to address students’ needs.

Deprivatized Practice: The idea that rather than teaching behind closed doors, teachers need to share their problems of practice with one another through processes such as lesson study, examining student work, video or written narrative cases, peer observations, and so on.

Reflective Dialogue: The dialogue is based on data such as artifacts of the classroom practice, including student work samples, video clips of a lesson, data collected during lesson study observations, and so forth.
