World of Work Teacher Achieves National Board Certification

Sarah Speciale in the Food Services Classroom Sara Speciale, the instructor for the World of Work program’s Food Services class, has achieved National Board Certification. This prestigious accomplishment is a demonstration of Speciale’s commitment and skill as an educator.

“This process is about good teaching practices, but it is mostly about the interaction with students, knowing my students and building a strong teacher to student relationship,” Speciale said. “This is something I have always valued but the National Board gave me the tools to understand that. By knowing my students and taking the time to learn about them, it allows me the tools I need to be a leader and teacher.”

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards was established in 1987 to advance the quality of teaching by defining rigorous standards for what teachers should know and be able to do. Achieving National Board Certification recognizes that a teacher has met and maintains the high standard laid out for each of the 25 certificate areas representing 16 disciplines.

To achieve National Board Certification, a candidate must complete four “components,” including one computer-based assessment component and three portfolio components, which reflect different aspects of teaching mastery. The process tests a teacher’s skills and curriculum knowledge while also providing tools to reflect and develop new practice.

Speciale started pursuing certification in 2017 and has worked with the help of the National Board Candidate Support COSER at TST BOCES.

“Having support from the COSER gave me access to a network of coaches that guided me into understanding what good teaching looks like in a reflective practice,” Speciale said. “Having the opportunity to work with other driven, successful professionals and having board certified teachers to look over my work and guide me, made me feel more secure through the process and in my classroom. It gave me the best support system that allowed me to continue moving in a positive direction. I have built professional relationships that will last a lifetime, and for that I am so grateful.”
