Criminal Justice Seniors Complete NY State Security Guard Certification

Fourteen TST BOCES Criminal Justice Students earned their NY state Security Guard Certification.

The seniors from the Criminal Justice II program completed an 8 Hour Pre-Assignment Security Guard Training Course, a requirement to become a security guard in New York State. The training was conducted between May 10 and May 14 and was hosted on-site at TST BOCES. Units of study within the training consisted of security guard roles and responsibilities, legal powers and limitations, emergency situations, communications and public relations, access control, and ethics and conduct.

At the conclusion of the training, all 14 students successfully completed the examination thereby awarding them their initial certification in becoming New York State certified security guards.

"I am so proud of the young men and women in this years' Criminal Justice II Program,” said Daniel Donahue, Criminal Justice II Instructor at TST BOCES. “They've worked extremely hard individually and as a group to complete the security guard training.”

As part of the program, students also completed prestigious internships with various criminal justice agencies throughout the area. Seniors Abby Jackson of the Trumansburg Central School District and Carolyn Verret of the Ithaca Central School District recently completed their internship with the Cayuga Heights Police Department. Senior Ian Dufour of the South Seneca Central School District recently completed an internship with the Seneca County Sheriff's Office. Senior Keven Morse of the Ithaca Central School District recently completed an internship with the Ithaca Fire Department.

Donahue says he found it most impressive that the students remained committed to their mission even while facing difficult times in the current local and national law enforcement community. Earlier this year, security guard training schools were deemed an essential business by executive order issued by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.

“I strongly believe all of these seniors are the law enforcement leaders of the future,” said Donahue.
